ABOUT NYFA:
The New York Foundation for the Arts’ mission is to empower artists at critical stages in their creative lives. Since 1971, NYFA has been providing services, information, and programmatic support for individual artists and emerging arts organizations.
Through its hallmark program, Artists’ Fellowships, NYFA provides the time and resources for the creative mind and the artistic spirit to flourish. NYFA awards approximately 130 Fellowships each year – in eight artistic disciplines one year, a different eight the following year. In all, the 16 disciplines are: Film, Video, Painting, Choreography, Music Composition, Photography, Sculpture, Poetry, Playwriting/Screenwriting, Fiction, Nonfiction Literature, Architecture/Environmental Structures, Cross-Disciplinary/Performative Work, Printmaking/Drawing/Artists’ Books, Crafts, and Computer Arts. Past NYFA Fellows include Spike Lee, Mira Nair, Barbara Kopple, George Tsontakis, Billy Collins, Suzan Lori-Parks, Tony Kushner, Meredith Monk, Tony Oursler, among over 5,000 others.
NYFA also provides support through its Fiscal Sponsorship program, which gives artists access to foundation and corporate funding, through use of its 501(c) (3) status and provides artists with professional development. Of particular acclaim are films that have been fiscally sponsored by NYFA, including: Kimberly Peirce’s Boy’s Don’t Cry, Nathaniel Kahn’s My Architect, and Todd Haynes’ Poison, among others.
Other NYFA programs include NYFACurrent, a a magazine for and by artists; which includes Business of Art workshops, annual conference, NYFA MARK, and much more, Strategic Opportunity Stipends, BUILD for emerging Dance companies, NYFA Classifieds and NYFA Source, the nation’s largest searchable database of grants, information, and resources for all artists.
